Karl Johan Aldrin was born in 1866 in Norra Råda, Värmland, Sweden, and Anna Nilsdotter was born in 1858 in Ekshärad, Sweden. The couple emigrated to the United States on March 9, 1892.
In Worcester, Massachusetts, Edwin Eugene "Gene" Aldrin (1896-1974) was born. He became a pilot and officer in the United States Army during the First and Second World Wars. Gene married Marion Moon (1903-1968).
In Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Gene and Marion had a son named Buzz Aldrin, who was born in 1930. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, New York in 1951. He became an Air Force pilot and flew 66 combat missions during the Korean War. In 1963, he wrote a thesis on orbital mechanics to obtain a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge. Later that same year, he was selected to become an astronaut.
On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 landed on the moon with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, while Michael Collins manned the command module orbiting the moon.
Buzz Aldrin recently got married in his fourth marriage (2023).
